In 1927, the institute was established as the Stalinabad Veterinary Laboratory, and in 1931 it was renamed the Experimental Research Veterinary Institute.
In 1932, it was reorganized into the Regional Veterinary Research Station, and in 1933 renamed again as the Stalinabad Bacteriological Veterinary Laboratory.
In 1943, based on this laboratory, the Experimental Veterinary Research Station was founded. In 1956, it became part of the Academy of Sciences of the Tajik SSR, and the Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine was established.
In 1961, the Veterinary Research Institute was separated from the Institute of Animal Husbandry, and the Veterinary Research Institute of Tajikistan was established. The institute was founded in accordance with Resolution No. 163 of the Council of Ministers of the Tajik SSR dated April 24, 1961, and is part of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Tajikistan.
In 2008, by Resolution No. 215 of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan dated May 2, 2008, the name of the Veterinary Research Institute was changed to the Veterinary Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Tajikistan.
In 2020, by Resolution No. 487 of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan dated August 31, 2020, the Veterinary Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Tajikistan was renamed the Institute of Veterinary Medicine of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Tajikistan.
The Institute of Veterinary Medicine meets international standards for research institutions working with pathogens of especially dangerous diseases — in terms of construction, communication infrastructure, and equipment.
