Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Tajikistan

The first scientific institution and the main base for conducting planned scientific research, as well as a source for the development of livestock science, was the Republican Experimental Station for Animal Husbandry, established on December 30, 1930, under the People’s Commissariat of Agriculture of the Tajik SSR. It was the first scientific institution in the field of animal husbandry in the country. The station laid the foundation for comprehensive research in this sector and became a source for the development of livestock science.

On the basis of this station, after several reorganizations, the Scientific Research Institute of Animal Husbandry of Tajikistan was established as a methodological center for the advancement of livestock science, development of production in this important sector, and training of young scientists.

According to the decree of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan No. 215 dated May 2, 2008, the institution was named the Institute of Animal Husbandry of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Tajikistan. Later, according to Government Decree No. 478 dated August 31, 2020, it was renamed the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Tajikistan. During this period, the structure of the institute was updated and new subdivisions were created.

The Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures of the AAST (main institution) includes 10 departments, 2 laboratories, 1 center, and 1 branch in the Sughd region:

• Republican Center for Biotechnology of Animal Husbandry, Rudaki district, Sarikishti agricultural unit;

• Branch of the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures of AAST, Sughd region, Bobo-Djohon Gafurov district.

The institute conducts research on key issues in the development of livestock in the country, formulates scientific conclusions, and applies scientific achievements in practice.

Main directions of scientific activity of the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures of AAST:

• Creation of new breeds, types, lines, hybrids, and crosses of highly productive livestock, poultry, and honeybees;

• Development of scientific foundations for the production and processing of feed for livestock and poultry, improvement of feeding norms and methods, and technologies for the rearing and care of livestock, poultry, and honeybees;

• Improvement of breeding and selection methods, enhancement of the genetic quality of livestock, poultry, and bees, and their reproduction;

• Development of reproductive methods (herd renewal), breeding, and biotechnology, testing and processing of biological and chemical means to increase productivity and heredity;

• Development of methods to improve the condition and utilization of pastures and natural meadows;

• Training of highly qualified scientific personnel (Doctors and Candidates of Sciences, Masters, PhD);

• Study and summarization of domestic and foreign scientific achievements for their application in animal husbandry;

• Preparation of forecasts and recommendations for the development of livestock in the country, scientifically based advice on the zoning of livestock breeds and effective use of genetic resources (elite livestock, semen, embryos);

• Preparation and presentation of final scientific and technical conclusions and recommendations, participation in planning their implementation in production;

• Summarization and recommendations for the introduction of advanced domestic and foreign experience;

• Provision of necessary scientific and methodological assistance to specialists of farms and agricultural departments;

• Improvement of the management system in the livestock sector.
